A short train ride northeast of Kyoto is the small potters village of Sumiyama. As you enter the village there is a cooperative sales room with pots from all the potters. Strolling through the many side streets you find potters and apprentices busy at work. No amenities so bring a lunch and something to drink.

Uji Valley

The area around Uji is quite beautiful with temples, gardens and wonderful people. I hear the Spring Pottery festival is one not to be missed especially when the cherry blossoms are in bloom.
