Kyoto Train Station This is an amazing place. Lots of shops, restaurants, and very friendly people. We were in Kyoto twice. The first time as the starting point of our trip directly from Narita. The second time was from Hagi (no pics of Hagi…lost I guess but found some great pots) and as a base for our day trip to Shigaraki. The architecture at the train station is really spectacular and I wish we had more time to explore. There is a tourist office on the second floor across from the Mister Donut “emergency food source”. Here you can find maps of Kyoto and surrounding areas in English and can ask questions of the English-speaking employees. |

Shosei-en Garden The garden is located just a few blocks north and east of the train station. It was a weekday and we were there when it opened. In comparison to keeping up with train schedules this was soooooo relaxing, peaceful and serine.

Kawai Kanjiro’s Home Located down a narrow street with a somewhat non-descript entrance is the studio and home of Kawai Kanjiro. His home is full of character. We were allowed to wander throughout the two-story home, his studio and large noborigama.

Kyoto Old Imperial Palace Our hotel was across the street from the Palace grounds. We didn’t tour the actual Palace…one needs an appointment and we were moving around Japan a great deal but we did stroll through the grounds on our way to Kiyomizudera Temple.
